The ten Mahavidyas are the great wisdom goddesses of Tantric Hinduism. Each represents an aspect of ultimate reality and a specific path to liberation.
The Ten Forms
Kali – the conqueror of time. Tara – the savior. Shodashi (Tripura Sundari) – the beauty of the three worlds. Bhuvaneshvari – the mistress of the worlds. Bhairavi – the terrifying one. Chinnamasta – the self-decapitated one. Dhumavati – the smoky one. Bagalamukhi – the paralyzer. Matangi – the outcast. Kamalatmika – the lotus-born.
Yantras as an Aid to Meditation
Each Mahavidya has her own Yantra – a geometric diagram that embodies her energy. In meditation, the Yantra serves as a focal point and a gateway to the respective deity.
